The National Boy Scout Heroism award has been presented to Troy Helms of Cub Scout Webelos Pack 78 in Grove for "demonstrating heroism and skill in saving or attempting to save life...."
On October 11, Ed Harvey, Director of Cherokee Council (right), and Randy Wilkins, District Chairman from Miami (center), presented the award to Troy (left) at the Pack meeting at the Grove Community Center.
Troy was swimming in a hotel pool in Springfield, MO, while on an overnight trip with other students from his school. One of Troy’s teachers saw another hotel guest, a five-year old girl, drowning. The child had been playing with another girl and both had drifted too deep for either to touch the bottom of the pool.
The teacher yelled to Troy to help the child, and he was quick to react. Troy pulled the younger child to safety and held on to her until the older child could help her back to the shallow end of the pool.
